While there were more than 70,000 attendees at the America’s Beauty Show in Chicago March 28-30, the event was still able to make a positive environmental impact. As the first beauty show to host a SalonSpa Sustainability Summit in 2008 and again this year, the owners and producers of America’s Beauty Show have made a commitment to integrating sustainability under three key elements: continued economic development to sustain our businesses, social progress to support and protect our communities, and an active and involved concern for the environment.

To that end, America’s Beauty Show management worked with McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago to produce a successful, environmentally friendly, and sustainable event. Recycling, reusing, and reducing waste formed one of the key components of the program to help ensure that as much waste as possible was diverted from landfills.

The results are now available and the environmental impact of this exclusive program at ABS includes:

• 400 trees saved
• 8,952 gallons of oil saved
• 96,635 kilowatts of electricity saved
• 164,906 gallons of water saved
• 44 yards of landfill space saved

According to America’s Beauty Network CEO and ABS show manager Paul Dykstra, “Overall, 77% of waste generated at ABS was diverted from landfills.”
