What is the proper way to smooth callused heels?

What is the proper way to smooth callused heels? I’ve been using a callus eliminator and a coarse file to gently remove callused skin, but when I finish with the polish the heel still seems to be all dry and cracked. I then apply foot cream especially for dry skin and cracked heels, but the callus buildup is still there.

Because dry, cracked heels develop over time, it’s unrealistic for a client to expect her heels to be completely smooth after one pedicure. The steps you’re taking are correct; however, for there to be improvement the client will have to do some at-home care as well.

I recommend clients take home a foot buffing pad for use in their shower and also a specially formulated foot cream like Warm Spirit’s Special Attention cream or CND’s Cucumber Heel Therapy. I find that the camphor in the special attention cream is great and the cucumber in the heel therapy is soothing to the skin. — Samone Rhodes is president of Samone Spa Bar in Chicago.
