January (birth flower: carnation; birthstone: garnet)

1. Fade the background on a curve using Raspberry Crème, Bubble Gum, and Show Me Your Beads.

2. Double dip (using two colors on the brush at once) random combinations of Sweet Pea, Pansy, and Tourmaline. To form the carnation, place the first round of petals directly on the nail; remember to ruffle the outer edge of the petal. Continue to build the petals around and use your brush to pull up on the petals to give them dimension. If desired, you can build the petals on a form and attach them to the nail. Place the flower and bud.

3. Peridot and Emerald create the stem and leaves. Use deep red garnet colored rhinestones. Apply top coat.

 1.
2009 Cover Tech Contest Winner: Jessica Hoel, LuvNailz, Bothell, Wash.

Jessica selected a backdrop of shells to show off her skill and artistry. The gifted salon owner took the photo herself using a model she found on Craigslist.

"I sculpted using Akzentz Gel's new Competition White and created moons using a custom gel I mixed," says Hoel, who is an Akzentz educator and does gels exclusively at her salon. “I squeezed the nails to give a nice C-curve. I’m a hand-filer and used a 180-grit to shape them.”

It took Hoel, a tech of seven years but first-time cover tech contestant, to create the set. Congratulations Jessica!
