Hard-to-Remove Polish
Bold and bright polishes are undoubtedly harder to remove off nails. Self magazine shows readers how to get the polish off and prevent stains in the future. Orly educator Christi Oster says, "Pull apart a cotton ball; saturate each piece with acetone remover and place over nails for a minute. More liquid gets on nails than with thick cotton."
To prevent this, prep nails with a nail thickener or use a water-based polish, like Sula Paint & Peel Duos, the magazine says.

Small Changes for the Summer
Glamour magazine suggests 75 little summer beauty changes for its readers. For nails, try a statement manicure: Thank God It's Summer hand-lettered nails, a simple form of nail art.
To get the look at home, the magazine says to apply pastel polish, then have a friend do the letters in a contrasting shade using an eyeliner brush. In the salon, techs can suggest it to clients who want bold summer nails, and emphasize that nail techs have steadier hands and professional equipment.
Suggested colors are Essie Nail Polish in Barbados Blue and Bachalorette Bash.

An In-Home Pedi Guide
Marie Claire magazine teams up with runway nail tech Elisa Ferri and Essie's Essie Weingarten to offer readers a four-step in-home pedicure class.
- Prep: Use a depilatory for hair-free toes. Soak feet in a mineral sea salt soak, although Ferri adds that liquid dish soap can be an alternative. Use an emery board or pumice stone to get rid of calluses. "Don't use anything more abrasvie, like a metal tool, and avoid infection by not exfoliating any blisters, corns, or bunions," Weingarten says. Soak clean foot in a new bath, and dab hydrogen peroxide on blisters after feet are clean.
- Shape: Apply cuticle oil (or olive oil, says Ferri) and push back cuticles. Keep nails square and file them down. "A lot of people get ingrowns from trying to file the sides," Weingarten warns.
- Lacquer: Apply base coat, two polish coats, and a top coat with UV filters to prevent fading. Wait two minutes between each step. Fix mistakes using a corrector pen or scrape away excess polish in the shower.
- Color: "When in doubt, choose coral," Ferri says. Weingarten says that while fingers and toes don't need to match, they should be complementary shades.
Marie Claire recommends an array of polish colors and nail products, including these:
- Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Color in Lickety-Split Lime
- Essie Nail Polish in BFF Best Boyfriend
- OPI Nail Lacquer in Red My Fortune Cookie
- China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

A Guy's Take on a Mani-Pedi
Redbook magazine sent some guys out for beauty treatments and got their reports. Bill, 31, tells readers what he thought of a mani-pedi at Red Door Spa. He was offered tea before his treatment. For his pedicure, "I sat in a big, comfy chair with a foot bath while Danielle, my spa specialist, talked me through the treatment. When she started to scrub my feet, I nearly kicked her — I'm very ticklish," he says. Bill agreed to let her buff his nails.
What you can take from his experience: Watch out for ticklish first-timers, and explain each of the steps as you're doing it.
