InStyle-Recommended Nail Salons from Coast to Coast
InStyle shines the spotlight on nail salons in some of the largest cities in the nation, listing location, phone number, price range, and a description for each salon. That's publicity you can't beat. It includes reader perks such as discounts or free products and upgrades for these salons.
The magazine also lists popular shades and manicure tips. The most popular polish colors are: Chicago, OPI Lincoln Park After Dark; Los Angeles, Essie Imported Champagne; Miami, Jessica Nail My Cabana Boy; New York, Rescue Beauty Lounge Stormy; and Seattle, OPI My Private Jet.
Be ready in case your client asks about preventing chipping. Instyle says to keep manicures from chipping, "ask your manicurst for an extra swipe of base coat, color, and topcoat across the tip of each nail. Then apply a layer of topcoat over the entire nail every morning."
Featured colors are Rescue Beauty Lounge polish in Purple Haze and Recycle, and Jessica Custom Nail Colour in Ruffled Bottoms, For Your Eyes Only, and Feather Boa.

Selecting Polish for Your Skin Color
Nail tech Josephine Allen of the Samuel Shriqui Salon in New York City shows Allure Spa readers how to choose the right polish to match skin tone.
For fair skin, Allen says a blue-based burgundy or a sheer pink that's not too yellow or white will tone down the redness found on light skin. She recommends OPI Sweet Heart and Essie Lacy Not Racy.
For medium skin, she says, "Both dusty rose and bright red with a hint of blue complement the yellowness of miedum skin tones." She likes Rimmel London Ash Rose and Lippmann Collection My Old Flame.
For dark skin, Allen suggests "deep wines verging on brown" and "bright orange-based red with no shimmer." She suggests OPI A Oui Bit of Red and Rescue Beauty Lounge Atame.

Mani and Pedi Tips from the Pros
Jin Soon Choi, owner of Jin Soon Natural Hand & Foot Spas in New York City, gives Allure Spa readers seven steps for a successful manicure.
- A nonacetone remover is less likely to dry out the nails.
- Clip and file nails. File in one direction unless you're using a buffing bock or fine-grade file.
- Soak for 3-5 minutes in warm water and milk or oil to soften cuticles, then push the cuticles back.
- Make your own exfoliating scrub with olive oil and sugar. Wrap in warm, damp washcloths for one minute.
- Massage lotion into arms and forearms.
- Apply thin coats of polish.
- Use a topcoat, and make sure nails are completely dry before using hands.
Ji Baek, owner of Rescue Beauty Lounges in New York City, recommends this pedicure routine every three weeks.
- Cut toenails straight across, and be careful not to overfile corners and sides as that can cause ingrown nails.
- Rub on cuticle cream and soak feet for three minutes. Push back cuticles.
- Use a foot file for calluses, rub on exfoliating scrub, and moisturize.
- Separate toes, and apply base coat and polish. Darker shades are better at hiding imperfections.
- Apply two thin coats and topcoat.
Allure Spa recommends CND Citrus Moisture Scrub, Bliss Diamancel #20 The Conquerer foot file, and Crabtree & Evelyn Citron Honey & Coriander Rejuvenating Hand Remedy.
