Matte Polish Lasts Longer

According to Good Housekeeping magazine, matte polishes last longer than shiny finishes because they won't get dull. "To maintain the matte, avoid hand lotions, nail oils, and base and top coats," the magazine tells its readers.

Featured products are OPI Matte Nail Lacquer in La Paz-itively Hot and Zoya Matte Velvert Lacquer in Posh.

Saving Money on Nail and Skin Care

Nail techs and aestheticians give Good Housekeeping readers tips on saving money at a nail salon, and do-it-yourself tricks for keeping hands and feet hydrated and exfoliated.

  • "Skip pro manicures and pedicures during the winter months and buff nails instead," says a Massachusetts nail tech. She also suggets switching to a nude polish to stretch out the time between salon visits.
  • Ask nail techs for a discount during the middle of the week, when business is slower.
  • Face creams with anti-aging ingredients can be used as hand or cuticle creams.
  • An at-home foot soak can be made with warmed olive oil, vitamin C, and lemon juice.
  • "Apply hand lotion adn cuticle oil, then put on a pair of light cotton gloves under rubber gloves before you do housework. The heat you generate will help the cream and oil penetrate better," a New York-based celebrity manicurist  tells the magazine.

Instyle Beauty Tips for Every Occasion

Among Instyle Makeover's list of tips are four pointers about nails.

#39: "Harden nail polish faster. Once they're partially dry, run nails under cold water. The icy temperature will speed up setting your polish." Bethany Newell

How to use cuticle oil in three ways:

#42: "Halt smudges. Drop cuticle oil on each nail just after polishing. The oil makes nail surfaces slippery, serving as a buffer beftween the lacquer and any object that might tarnish it." Jaimi Brooks

#43: "Fix smears. Brush cuticle oil onto the nail and gently rub out the crease with fingers." J.B.

#44: "Refresh dull polish. A spot of cuticle oil adds a nice sheen to lackluster lacquer. It hydrates nails, while sinking into every nook and cranny to smooth out imperfections." J.B.

The magazine suggests using Jessica Phenomen Oil intensive moisturizer.
