“Amy Becker did my nails; it was her wedding present to me. The nails were sculptured gel. Forms were applied, then thick ribbons of frosted pink gel were laid diagonally over the nail extending onto the form, allowing for space to place a rhinestone in between the middle ribbons. The pink gel and rhinestones were then sealed over with a builder gel, shaped, and, for a final touch, a matching rhinestone was adhered behind every nail in the same position as seen in the front.”

Fall 2009 Color Trends from the Pantone Institute

Subtle contrasts make up the diverse color palette for fall 2009, according to color authority Pantone Inc. “The fall 2009 palette is more unique and thoughtful than the typical autumnal hues of years past,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Designers recognize the desire for fundamental basics that speak to current economic conditions, but also understand the need to incorporate vibrant color to grab the consumers’ eyes and entice them to buy.”

Colors and images in the slideshow are from Pantone Fashion Color Report Fall 2009 (excerpts reprinted with permission). To view the full report, visit www.pantone.com/fall2009.

The glamour and hope of post WWII returned to fashion in the form of bold beauty elements including matte red lips, pin curled hair, lined eyes and half moon manicures. Ruffian (shown), inspired by a vintage Vogue cover, updated the moon manicure from Vogue’s coral to a deep blood red. At Thakoon, CND’s Wanda Ruiz took the look a step further with a French moon mani in beige and black. At FORM, the urban black uniforms were contrasted with ’40s hair and makeup and black and white moon manicures. At ThreeAsFour, CND’s Roxanne Valinoti abstracted the manicure with black triangular moons on nude nails.
