How to maintain that golden glow with our submitting to the harsh rays of the sun? The nail care menu at Atlanta’s Salon Red offers two intriguing option: the $45 Bronzed and Buffed Manicure and the $70 Bronzed and Buff Pedicure. Both are spa-style treatments that include targeted sunless tanning. “These services typically appeal to mature women who have difficult applying sunless tanning products on themselves or who just want some color on their extremities while they wear short sleeves or shorts,” says cosmetologist Angie Gross.

For the pedicure service - which takes 60-90 minutes - the client lays on an inclining spa bed with a bolster under her knees. A pedicure tub is set below the bolster for the client to soak in. After the callus work is done, the large are exfoliated up to mid-thigh. Next, a moist hot towel is used to remove the exfoliant, followed by a dry towel. The pedicure bowl and bolster is then removed, and using gloves, the technician applies the tanning product starting at the feet and massaging upward. After passing the knee, the product is “feathered” upward to avoid a distinct line. With the knees bent and the bottom of the feet flat on the service bed (as if the client was on the beach), the nail and cuticle work is done. Finally a moisturizing is gently applied to the bottom of the feet and the toenails are polished.
