Ohio State Board Clamps Down on MMA

Reacting to numerous complaints from state salon owners, the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology added a series of rules regarding the use of products containing methyl methacrylate (MMA).

A letter sent by David Williamson, executive director, to salons in Ohio stated that the board examined evidence (provided primarily by the FDA and the Nail Manufacturers Council) on the dangers of nail products containing MMA and has adopted the following policies:

Use, storage, or dispensing of [MMA-based] nail products will be grounds for being cited in violation of state regulations governing the practice of cosmetology.

Nail service providers must take steps to ensure that all nail service products do not contain MMA as a monomer agent for cosmetic nail applications.

State inspectors will request salon owners/managers to provide MSDS for all nail service products to verify that chemicals used are appropriate and safe for public use. Inability to provide either the MSDS or the manufacturer’s ingredient listing on containers used to store or dispense nail service products will be grounds for being cited in violation of state regulations governing the practice of cosmetology.
