Where classic reds and demure pink once ruled, bold, edgy polish shades are taking their turn in the spotlight. “In Manhattan new nail colors are discussed as feverishly as inside tips at the racetrack,” says Allure in an August article titled “9 Inch Nails.” “Five years ago people would have wondered why. But today the prospect of a never-before-seen polish arouses squeals of delight.” writes the magazine. Illustrated by several larger-than-life pin-ups of boldly painted fingers and toes, the article (we hope) signals an end to the subtle snubbing nails have received in certain circles.

Allure commissioned this hand-carved acrylic creation by nail technician Bernadette Thompson to illustrate this cover story on the growing popularity of knock-out nails.
