The Oklahoma state legislature has doubled the number of hours required to become a nail technician---from 300 hours to 600 hours. The law takes effect July 1, 1993.
“It’s been 300 hours since 1935,” says Jennifer McRee, secretary to the director of the Oklahoma State Board. “But now nail technicians are doing a lot more, such as acrylic extensions and wraps, and there’s too much to learn in 300 hours.” McRee says many Oklahoma beauty schools began offering a 600-hour course even before the law passed.
The state board is also revising the school curricula and rewriting its health and safety regulations.
