Ask nail technician Charese Sailor, who got Tammy Taylor to stray from her usual conservative pink-and-white or red-polished nails to simple nail art for the first time. Sailor, the owner of Amazing Nails, an East Lansing, Mich.-based company offering instructional nail art videos and seminars, attend a Tammy Taylor workshop in Chicago in September 1997. When the class was over, she put some nail art on Taylor’s assistant, attracting the boss’s attention.

How long does it take and what materials are used, she wanted to know. So Sailor demonstrated a favorite design on Taylor’s well-known nails. A week later, Sailor heard Taylor was still wearing the elegant, rhinestone-studded design.
