Editor’s note: This is the second in an occasional series on understanding industry statistics. As the sponsor of NAILS Magazine’s annual statistics section in the Big Book, OPI Products has taken a keen interest in helping nail technicians understand the “take a keen interest in helping nail technicians understand the “take-home value” of these figures. This month in keeping with our education theme, Suzi Weiss-Fischmann writes about the value of adding to your technical and product knowledge after school.

Seventy-eight percent of nail techs surveyed for the NAILS 2004-2005 Big Book said they wanted to learn more about the industry after they finished nail school, yet only 45% have taken two or more continuing education classes after graduation. Why not more? In a few states, continuing education is the law, and I believe that continuing education is the key to staying abreast of the trends. And, being on top of the trends translates into profits!

Manufacturers have to stay in touch with the latest trends and techniques, since it is the trends that drive new product development. For example, when the pedicure boom hit, it was the manufacturers who responded with new products to fill the need. When acrylic services began to down trend, it was the manufacturers who turned their focus to new natural nail product development.

Manufacturers offer many opportunities for continuing education at shows and distributorships. Most are virtually free due to the fact that they provide generous product kits for the low tuition price allowing you to implement immediately in your salon what you have learned. And many offer certification in the topic presented, which allows you to show you clients that you are worth the cost of the services you provide. Let’s say you wanted to raise your prices. How better to show your client that you have earned that increase than by demonstrating you commitment to the best and most current education?

Looking beyond your own backyard can be a great way to find opportunities for education with added benefits. For example, OPI offers weekend destination events like our Academy at Sea. There’s nothing savvier than combining business with pleasure.

Whether you decide to attend a class at your local show, or take off for an exotic destination, continuing education is your ticket to a brighter future!
