competitor and educator Andy Ho has a love for extreme nail shapes. So much so that his Instagram handle is @xtremenailsandy. The Colorado Springs, Colo.-based tech has done nails for 12 years and still loves learning from other nail artists. In fact, he uses the word “love” frequently when describing his feelings toward the nail industry. While the shape of these nails isn’t extreme, the toenail design is definitely not your average client request. For standout summer toes, Ho mixed products and techniques to create a shimmery ocean-inspired design.  Another thing he “loves” doing is sharing techniques with other techs, so read on for his steps.

Here’s how to get this month’s cover look:

1. Prep the nails using IBD Just Gel-Polish Base Coat and cure. Apply a coat of IBD Aurora Midnight Blue Magnetic gel-polish and cure for 30 seconds in an LED lamp.

2. Apply the second coat and use the wand to create the magnetic effects. Cure for 60 seconds, add top coat, then cure for another 60 seconds.

3. Buff to remove all surface shine. Sponge no cleanse top coat and cure for 30 seconds. Rub Holo Femme Bot Chrome onto the nail to create a holographic effect. Apply top coat and cure for 60 seconds.

4. Use IBD Hard Gel Intense White with IBD Art Brush to create the sea foam design and cure for 60 seconds.
