Tell us a bit about yourself and your career.

I’ve been in the beauty industry for just under 10 years. I originally began my career as a cosmetologist, but I wasn’t having any luck finding a hair salon that I truly loved, so I decided to redirect my focus on nail styling. I fell in love with all the elements that go into creating an amazing set of nails. I currently work at Stash House Az in Phoenix.

What are your health challenges?

The challenge in this industry is to always work smarter, not harder, meaning I try to find ways to maximize efficiency so that my body is never too exhausted. That includes everything from how my table is set up to how many clients I’m able to juggle throughout the day. We have to keep our bodies and minds fit for as long as we intend to work.

Tell me about your fitness plan and the results?

I’m currently taking a boxing class with my co-worker — we go two to three times a week. The class teaches you discipline, stamina, and endurance, three things you need to maintain a long career in beauty. Also, being able to use that time to clear my mind and release any stress is important. I’ve been working on my fitness now for well over a year. Boxing class combined with sitting on a balance ball during work has improved my posture and core strength.

What further goals do you have? How does your job as a nail tech affect your plan?

I would love to stay fit enough to continue pushing myself to grow as an artist and do session work for photo and video shoots. Those long hours need a healthy body and mind! I also really like working in a team environment. I think it’s beneficial because it teaches you the importance of your role in the brand of the salon. As long as I am fit and well, I will always be the best version of myself while working on the salon floor.

What has been the most difficult aspect of your healthy lifestyle?

I love to snack as most of us do at the salon, so eating super clean is difficult, especially when you’re surrounded by people who aren’t. We have clients who bring boxes of cupcakes and cookies every week, so there is always temptation!

What’s your advice for other nail techs who want to embark on a healthy lifestyle?

My advice is to work with small, realistic goals and stay balanced. Too much pressure on yourself isn’t good for your mental wellness and that’s most important in this business.
