I have a huge wall of color as they walk in the salon. My usual clients know what they are in the mood for. When it comes to new clients, I bring them some colors I know will look good with their skin tone.

I say go with your original idea. Clients get distracted by the color wheels and the possibilities. But if they were thinking about getting plain black while driving to their appointment, I say do it. This never disappoints!

We get an idea of a color scheme and go from there. I then pick the most popular from what other clients have been choosing.

I start by asking if they prefer shimmers or creams and if they have a shade or two they’re drawn to. From there I’ll pick two or three and let them pick from those. Or I ask if they would like to be surprised and I pick myself. This usually leads to clients asking me to pick their color for them.

I usually talk about what design they like for their next appointment during the service. Not only do I get them to book in advance that way, I also get them to choose a color design early. If they want to change it’s fine, but usually they are relieved when they don’t have to decide spontaneously.

I am always a part of the decision-making process. It not only helps with timing, but shows your guest that she can trust you by taking initiative. Asking open-ended questions such as, “Did you have anything in mind?” or “What colors do you gravitate toward?” is always helpful.

We pick a color by season, complexion, mood, and sometimes by the pictures they bring in.

I always have them start with what they don’t like and eliminate those colors. I then figure out if they’re going for bold or subtle.

With nail art, I ask them to send me one or two pictures of what they might want before they come in. Then we talk color scheme and I sometimes even draw up the design and send it to them beforehand to make sure. That way we both know exactly what to expect and don’t waste time.

I usually get them to decide if they want a light color or a dark color and then I pick three. That makes it easier for them.

I ask them to close their eyes and take a deep breath. Then I ask them to tell me the first color they see.

I remind them that I have a client right after them and need to stay on schedule. I tell them they’re welcome to come earlier next time to choose what they’d like or bring an inspiration photo.
