You’d think that with the plethora of polish colors at our fingertips, we could never want for more. As if! There’s still always the perfect one that we can’t wait to get our hands on (or on our hands).

Consumer editors feel the same way. They’re figuring out that if you can’t get what you want…you can make it yourself.

Lucky Magazine’s editorial assistant, wanted the perfect gray and poured together white and black shades until she made her perfect charcoal hue.

Teen Vogue’s beauty director interviewed celebrity manicurist Elle, who mixed and matched with a little less mess. She layered different colors of OPI and Barielle for different effects.

Tap into this trend in your own salon. And as you urge your clients to use more creativity, use the chance to upsell. Offer them retail on the perfect mix-and-match colors or polish them with one and send them packing with the perfect layering color for later.

And don’t let the mixing end with polish. You can always layer gels or mix acrylic powders for unique customer colors, too. Just be sure to keep track of the “recipe” for later!
