Mobile nail tech Sherry Baro wasn’t sure how the economy would affect her target market — seniors and adults with disabilities. So two years ago she instituted several measures to keep supply costs low. “It’s really helped keep more money in my pocket. And I haven’t had to raise my prices,” say Baro, who is based in Menifee, Calif.

Here are some of her tips:

> Cut orangewood sticks in half.

> Cut files in half for manicures and pedicures.

> Use tissue for toe separators.

> Use an e-file for gel clients and also a disposable mini block buffer.

> Use gel polish instead of nail polish, eliminating the need for pedicure slippers.

> Make your own gel polish colors with pigment powders.

> Measure out your bulk pedicure soak and place it in mini bags (100 bags are 97 cents at Wal-mart).

> Buy dental gauze instead of cotton. It’s cheaper and there’s no lint.
