As of December 31, 1994 nail technicians practicing in Illinois without a cosmetology license need to have a nail technician’s license. Technicians who have been working part-time since January 1992 or full-time since January 1993 were eligible to be grandfathered in before December 31.

Now, regardless of prior experience, unlicensed nail technicians need to attend an approved school of cosmetology or school of nail technology, complete a total 350 hours of nail technology education and pass an exam authorized by the Department of Professional Regulations.
