"I used to go to the mall with my extra cash, now I go to the feed store,” says Paula Gilmore, horse enthusiast and owner of Tips Nails Salon in San Mateo, Calif. She and her husband own and show registered paint horses, which are, she says, basically quarter horses with spots. Gilmore’s 8-year-old award-winning mare, named She’s A Salty Princess, will be presenting her with a foal by year’s end. She plans to breed her newest acquisition, a quarter horse named Miss Acoosa, to a champion paint stallion.

Gilmore, who plans to retire from the beauty industry this year, says she’s going to ride off into the sunset. “We just bought a 32-foot horse trailer and we’ll truck out on our own big adventure.”
