The SkillsUSA practical applications evaluate the contestants’ abilities to perform the most common nail services in salons.


At the 2013 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, the best students compete for medals. In the nail care category, contestants are evaluated on oral communication skills, acrylic application, tip and wrap application, nail polish application, nail art, and a written exam (which consists of proper sanitation, chemical safety, salon procedures, and more).

The 2013 winners are as follows:

COLLEGE/POSTSECONDARY LEVEL

Gold: Stephanie Schoolcraft, Carver Career Center, Charleston, W. Va.
Silver: Kelly Kachaterian, Mecosta Osceola Career Center, Big Rapids, Mich.
Bronze:  Kensie  Guillory, San Juan College, Farmington, N.M.

HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL

Gold: Hanna Fortin, Chariho Career Tech Center, Wood River Junction, R.I.
Silver: Brooklyn K. Lackney, Mecosta Osceola Career Center, Big Rapids, Mich.
Bronze: Cheylin Dixon, Canyon’s Technology Education Center, Sandy, Utah

The members of the national technical committee for the Nail Care Technology contest include chair Teresa Lewis, OPI Products Inc.; Mandy Burton, Pivot Point International Inc.; Clarabelle Hern, Custom Nail Technology; Danielle Klahr, Milady, a division of Cengage Learning; and, Judy Sheils, OPI Products Inc.
 
A national education team assists the national technical committee. Members include Dianne Alldredge, Snead State Community College; Brenda Ayers, Manatee Technical Institute; Denise Baer, Montachusett Regional Vocational-Technical High School; Tina Bavin, Four County Career Center; Janeen Hackney, Monterey High School; Minnie Rodgers, SkillsUSA, District 13; and, Kay Stannard, Four County Career Center.
