Too Young for Pedis?

by NAILS Magazine | March 7, 2008 | Bookmark +

Last week The New York Times published an article (“Never Too Young for That First Pedicure”) about young girls growing up too fast. Writer Camille Sweeney describes a 7-year-old’s birthday party at a Dashing Diva salon. She goes on to question whether today’s society is turning young girls into consumers too soon.

The article states, “Today, cosmetic companies and retailers increasingly aim their sophisticated products and service packages squarely at 6- to 9-year-olds, who are being transformed into savvy beauty consumers before they’re out of elementary school.”

Apparently it’s something youth market analysts are calling KGOY (kids getting older younger). We’ve all seen it happening over the years. And while I don’t like seeing little girls wearing make-up outside of playing dress up, I don’t see the harm in pedicure parties. To me that’s like the ultimate dress-up party with your friends. It’s social. It’s girly. It’s fun. And I don’t see how that’s a bad thing. (But don’t get me started on young girls wearing enhancements.)

Do you think there is such a thing as “too young” for a manicure and pedicure? What are your feelings on the salon industry contributing to this “KGOY” trend? Leave your comments below in Feedback.
