5 Things I Want to Say

by NAILS Magazine | May 7, 2008 | Bookmark +

I never actually set out to insult the readers of NAILS magazine, but on occasion I’ve done just that. When I write a column articulating what I see as a brutal and unpleasant truth about the nail industry (like the time I complained about how sloppily nail technicians dressed for tradeshows), I get letters, lots of them. When I wrote the column titled “5 Things You Aren’t Supposed to Say About the Nail Industry” I heard from many readers who said, essentially, “Right on!” There were some quibbles from tradeshow promoters (because I wrote that I thought shows had become a waste of time), but mostly, nail professionals seem to appreciate the full airing of our dirty laundry, so that we might begin the process of cleaning it.

So it was especially gratifying that last week the editorial got a nod from the Western Publishing Association with a Maggie Award for Best Editorial/Signed Essay for Trade Magazines. We submit entries for these national awards (judged among magazines published west of the Rockies) every year and compete with some of the biggest names in trade and consumer publishing. It was thrilling and humbling to win the award for something I love to do, and I share it with you.

That’s me in the picture up top, on stage accepting my award. And the picture below is of the whole NAILS and VietSALON teams at the banquet.
