Sole to Soul

A friend forwarded me an interesting Associated Press article today about church volunteers who offer mini-pedicures (including a soak, pumice, nail trim, scrub, ointment, massage, and polish) to a city’s homeless, in order to both head off possible foot infections in this highly susceptible group and to bolster these individuals’ self-esteem. (You can read the article here)

It made me think about what I take for granted, including the fact that I get professional nail services virtually every month and, for when I simply can’t make the time, have all of the equipment to do a quick trim and polish at home. Before reading this article, it never really occurred to me how important foot health is to overall well-being, because I’ve never had a problem maintaining soft, clean feet. (The article cites foot and nail infections that can make it hard to walk, which I’d imagine would make it near impossible for any of those afflicted to find a job.)

So, I was wondering: have any of you ever done any volunteer work in offering pedicures to the homeless (or anyone who wouldn’t normally have access to the service)? What was the experience like? Leave me a note in Feedback.
