NAILS Wins 5 Maggies!

by NAILS Magazine | April 27, 2009 | Bookmark +

As anyone who is a “fan” of NAILS Magazine on Facebook already knows, Friday night was an epic moment for the NAILS team, capturing five Western Publications Association Maggie Awards including the Gold Award for the Best Overall Trade Publication. (The Maggies are like the magazine industry’s Oscars…and Best Overall Trade Publication is like winning Best Picture!)

We were thrilled to win Best Health and Beauty Trade Publication and Most Improved Trade Publication, but winning Best Overall just really pushed it over the top. The passion and commitment our team has for the nail industry and putting out the best possible magazine is incomparable.

BEST OVERALL TRADE PUBLICATION (the Gold Award)

Best How-To Article/Trade

Best Table of Contents/Trade and Consumer

Best Health and Beauty/Trade

Most Improved/Trade (over 50,000 circulation)

I’m so proud of our entire team and I’d like to take a moment to give a special shout out to them all. (Bear with me, it takes a village…to put out such a great magazine!)

Cyndy Drummey, our tireless publisher, who handed over the reins to me last year, and trusted us with a complete redesign of the magazine. She is a true visionary who even after 18 years can inspire so many great ideas for the magazine.

Danielle Parisi, our talented art director, who worked crazy hours with me (sometimes until 1 a.m. when we were getting down to the wire) and shares in my vision for a consumer-quality trade magazine chock full of information for the nail industry. I don’t know what I’d do without her!

Sree Roy, our managing editor, who writes features, handles countless departments, oversees many functions on our numerous web pages, and brings a level of professionalism to the magazine like we haven’t seen in a long time.

Judy Lessin, our features editor, who manages all of our freelance writers, pulls together so many of the fun “Nails File” pieces, and helps me remember when we last ran a topic or photo that I just can’t seem to place.

Tim Crowley, our associate editor, who has been with us the shortest amount of time and managed to win his very own Maggie this year for Best How-To Article for the piece he did on how to take pictures of your nails. As the first male NAILS editor, it’s also fun to have his perspective on things.

Ajay Peckham, our senior graphic artist, who started with us just in time to help with the redesign (that must have been a little daunting). She brings fresh art and layout ideas to the magazine and we just found out she’s a pretty good illustrator too!

Kim Pham, our graphic artist, who in addition to working on the pages of NAILS and our sister publication VietSALON, is tackling a new role this year as an associate editor for VietSALON. She’s a great photographer and an awesome team player.

Michelle Mullen, our associate publisher and salesperson, who is our biggest cheerleader. She’s always the first to tell us how awesome we are (we can’t hear it enough) and she keeps coming up with new ideas (even when we’re so busy we don’t think we have time to add anything else).

Mary Baughman, our salesperson, who brings in lots of new advertising prospects so we can bring you the more of the latest and greatest in nail products.

Carla Benavidez, our production manager, who makes sure the editorial and advertising content gets placed in the proper order, and who chases down ads from all of our advertising partners.

Sheila Arkee, our sales and marketing coordinator, who makes sure we stay on top of industry events, and makes sure everything is running smoothly with advertising promotions.

Tri Ta, our VietSALON managing editor, who keeps us informed on what’s going on in the Vietnamese salons, and works to put out a solid magazine in its own right for our Vietnamese readers.

Michelle Pratt and Erin Dixon, our contributing writers, who help NAILS immeasurably by offering real nail tech voices and perspectives to the magazine.

Ty and Ed Bobit, the president and chairman of our company, who are supportive of us and put up with our ever-present need to push the boundaries and create stellar editorial content.

Our many bloggers, reader-contributors, and everyone else who calls or writes to tell us how we’re doing and what we can do to make YOUR INDUSTRY magazine better.

And lest you think we’re content to rest on our laurels, we’re constantly striving to bring you more, bring you better, and help you be the best you can be. So look for continued excellence from the team at NAILS. We’re here for you.
