But It's Not Your Art!

Look. I like Minx and all its various counterparts as much as the next gal ... Well, OK, maybe not. I want to like it, but honestly, I think it needs some tweaking before I could personally make it a staple on my service menu ... but that's not my point.

My point is that I like it fine, and I certainly understand that many, many of my colleagues have not only embraced this type of enhancement, but are also seeing some really impressive profits from it. That's awesome — really, it is.

But it ain't ART. At the very least, it's not YOUR art. All you did was put a fancy sticker on the nails. Sure, I know applying these things requires a certain amount of skill and finesse, but when it comes to doing nail art, this isn't much different than using decals.

So stop entering Minx in nail art competitions.

It just bugs me to no end to see all these entries around the 'net that are so painfully obviously Minx.

I think the point of any competition is to showcase your skills. Create something from scratch. Overlaying a nail with a piece of pre-printed, self-adhesive vinyl just does not say “talent” to me. I'm not saying it doesn't look great, I'm saying it doesn't belong in a competition. Unless it's a "how well can you apply Minx" competition.

I was pretty upset when I saw this year's Nails Magazine cover winner — both of ’em — but since the cover is now up for popular vote, I took a deep breath and sucked it up like a big girl. That's what the people voted for; I guess that's what wins. But now I'm sifting through the entries for The Nail Team's 2nd Photographic Competition on Facebook, and I'm seeing entries showcasing Minx.

I just don't understand why anyone would think that Minx would qualify. It just doesn't seem unique enough to me. And, BTW, I know there are other brands of pre-printed, self-adhesive vinyl wraps besides Minx; my point is not to single out a particular brand pro or con, my point is that it just irritates me to see this type of product lined up amongst all the truly impressive entries that obviously required so much work to create from scratch.

Nevertheless, my toes look great.
