Filing Question

by NAILS Magazine | April 20, 2010 | Bookmark +

I have been fielding questions quite regularly about competition techniques — which is great. I love that people are curious about nail competitions so keep those questions coming.

One question that I got this week was whether a competitor should use a new file for each nail in a competition? That’s a good question. The reason a competitor would use a new file for each nail is because each time she uses that file, the grit becomes less and less effective. So by the time she reach nail #10, her 180-grit file is now a 220-grit, and what she really needs is that 180-grit.

(Or maybe she really needs a 150-grit file. It depends on how you apply your product. If you’re good at sculpting, you don’t need to file too much.)

But honestly, using a new file on every nail is a personal choice. Some competitors say it saves time filing to have a new grit for each nail. Others argue that the nano-seconds you save are lost by picking up and putting down the files each time.

As for me, I don’t use new files for each nail. I only use two files, I use a 150-grit file for the perimeter of the nail and a 180-grit file on the surface of the nail. But like I told my questioner, I don’t file that much, I sculpt.
