Behind the Polish Curtain

by NAILS Magazine | September 8, 2010 | Bookmark +

On the September 7 episode of “The Today Show,” reporter Sara Haines went where few have been before — behind the scenes at OPI Products during a polish naming session with executive VP and artistic director Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. For a segment called “They Get Paid for That?”, Suzi told the show she’s got her dream job. But it’s not as easy as you might think.

It’s a neat look at the lab at OPI, with Suzi personally hand-mixing custom polish colors for the show’s hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathy Lee Gifford. The naming team (which includes people from OPI marketing, design, purchasing, and even George Schaeffer himself) then gets together to name these two special polishes. They’re in a conference room with a spread of food and Suzi moderates while everyone throws out ideas. (They come up with One Single-er Sensation, Hoda You Think You Are?, Are My Roots Showing?, and I Live for Today.)

It does look like a fun job. But can you imagine having to come up with so many color names year after year? It can’t be easy and Suzi’s been doing it since 1989! And even though it was a “staged” naming session for “The Today Show,” it gives you an idea what goes into naming one of the most well-known nail polishes in our industry.
