First Practice Nails In A While

by NAILS Magazine | September 21, 2010 | Bookmark +

I did my first practice set of competition nails in a long, long time on Sunday, what a mess. Man, do I have ring rust! There was shadowing, swirling, choppy, haggard smile lines and the moons...oh the moons.

And this is why I can not stress enough that practice is a must.

Myself included.

Fortunately, I started to loosen up and work out all the kinks. I always start with the pinky of the right hand, move through to the thumb, next to the pinky of the left hand and again through to the thumb. By the time I get to nail #8, everything is going along nice and smooth. And you can see that in the nails.

Another important point here, on competition days, it’s stupendously important to warm up prior to the competition. And I don’t mean the night before or that morning in the hotel, I mean after you get to the event, set up all your supplies, prep your model (do NOT forget this step), and then warm up by slinging some acrylic. Ok. Not slinging, sculpting. Meticulously. On a form.

Happy practicing.
