Nail Company Founder Zoya Reyzis Likens Manicures to Music

by NAILS Magazine | December 3, 2010 | Bookmark +

You may know that Zoya Reyzis is the nail tech behind the company Art of Beauty, which manufactures Zoya nail polish and Qtica hand, nail, and body treatments. But did you know that she’s a classically trained pianist whose musical education began at the age of 7 in Ukraine in the former Soviet Union? The subject of an engaging profile in The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Reyzis shared stories from her nail career, which began in Cleveland in 1986 when she worked as a nail technician at Zoya, a salon she opened with her chemist husband, Michael.

The couple launched Art of Beauty in 1996 after clients began clamoring for a nail-drying product Michael invented called Zoom Dry, according to the article. Now sold around the world, Zoya nail polish offers more than 300 colors and Zoya Remove Plus Nail Polish Remover just won Allure’s Best of Beauty award in October.

Besides helping to run the business, Reyzis, teaches piano and sits on several music boards. She even finds music in a manicure, telling The Plain Dealer: “There’s something intimate about the 30 minutes a manicurist spends with a client. I related each phase of the service to a part of a musical composition: exposition (the removal of old polish); development (nail shaping, filing, and cuticle care); recapitulation (applying new polish). Everything is music to me.”

In the article, Reyzis also relates several interesting stories from her past, including a misunderstanding about the term “massage parlor,” a transsexual client, and a chance encounter with U2’s Bono in Milan.
