Nails 101: A Student Blog

Week 11: Cramming, Slamming, and Dunking Week

This week has been exhausting. I spent all weekend studying, getting up at 6 a.m. to study for the state board exam. It has been really rough. I have been going to school and taking every chance I can to study and prepare.

This week our instructor, Rebecca, was on vacation so we had another instructor come in for theory. We had a total of seven chapters to review this week. The book talked about your image of self and how it relates to the beauty industry. I loved this chapter. I have not bought a pack of cigarettes since I started learning more about skin issues, image, and how it can affect my career. I have been trying to eat healthier to become healthy as a person. My dream job would be to work in a beauty and wellness center.  As I look around I see people who are in class but do not take a second look at how image can in fact affect what job you are given.

Tuesday we learned about the importance of teamwork. I feel like that once you are in a salon the kind of teamwork varies depending on what type of salon that you decide to be at. We watched a movie called “Remember the Titans.” We had to write an short essay discussing the importance of teamwork and how it has affected everyone on the football team.

We learned about business and how it relates to the salon setting. It was a fast-moving chapter. We have to take a 100-question test about it. Also, we learned about and started building our portfolios, which includes photos, resume, letters and so forth. I have mine all ready to go.

On Thursday, I went to take the test! I passed. I am so excited. I just have the practical part of the test and then I need to get the hours required to finish up.

This is almost over. I remember the first day I walked into this classroom — the nerves that I felt about it, the way everyone was. I am glad that some have left and I am sad that I have to leave some.
