3 Ventilation Success Stories

by NAILS Magazine | January 14, 2013 | Bookmark +
While working on a feature story about salon ventilation for NAILS Magazine’s February issue, I came across several salon owners who are an inspiration to all of us in their installation of proper ventilation systems. Though it’s unlikely your salon will face any legal repercussions from insufficient ventilation, there are compelling health reasons to protect yourself and your staff. Here are three owners' stories:

Success Story: Nails By Andrea, Branford, Conn.
System: Aerovex Systems Three-Zone Ventilation System

Andrea Doyle works in a home-based salon and, though friends visiting the residential part of the house would sometimes complain about the nail product smell, Doyle herself never smelled anything amiss. Then one day instead of going straight from the salon area to the living area at the end of the day, she took a detour to pick her kids up from school. When she opened the door to her house, the smell was overwhelming. “Wow, I need to do something,” she realized. Among other measures (including a source-capture system), she replaced the filter of the shared HVAC system with a salon-quality filter. Now, she says no one complains about a smell, and clients ask her “Am I your first one today?” when she’s been working all day.

Success Story: Pink with Envy Salon, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada
System: Salon Pure Air Spa II

Like in the U.S., salons in Canada don’t generally face legal repercussions from having inadequate ventilation. But Brandy Coull, owner of Pink with Envy Salon, had personal motivation to improve her salon’s air quality. “I developed thyroid cancer nine years ago and ever since then I’ve been looking for healthier products and ways of doing things for my clients and myself,” she says. The system has proved a marketing tool for the salon, including posts to Facebook, plus when potential new clients call it’s part of the pitch they hear about why they should choose Pink with Envy over other salons. Coull says the money was well worth the investment. “Dusting is so much easier now. Almost of all of the dust gets pulled into the system, and I don’t have to pay my workers to clean as much.”

Though salon owner Iryna Giblett was healthy, she invested in a source-capture system in 2009 after prodding from her husband Bob, who was involved in nail product development and was learning more about product ingredients. “In my mind, I feel safer, knowing I’m breathing clean air,” Giblett says. “Plus, most of the dust is removed now, so my table and clothes are cleaner.” Client reaction has been positive as well. “I explained what I did, and clients were pleased that I took their health seriously too.”
