Help Fund An Indie Nail Wraps Brand (and Apply for Your Own Line)

Kickstarter.com has been a boon to the nail industry. We told you about a nail art documentary that was funded on the site and about a woman who funded her cross-county manicuring expedition on the crowd-sourcing site as well (we’ll have more on Breanne Trammell this summer!).

Now we’re excited to learn about a Los Angeles-based indie nail wraps brand that has blown past its $6,000 goal, earning a whopping $33,155 so far to make its eye-catching nail art wraps come to fruition. And, even though it met its original goal, you nail fanatics may want to donate money to Scratch’s collaboratively-designed nail polish wraps before the week is up: “There’s a lot we’ll be able to do now that we were previously going to have to put on hold. Our first step will be to fulfill all of the Kickstarter orders by ordering the full three collections. We now will also be able to order the beautiful custom packaging we’ve had designed for us so we can start selling in boutiques and salons. We also plan on restocking some popular designs that didn’t get a full run the first time because of lack of funds,” says founder Chelsea Kent, a web designer and front-end developer with a love for the arts. “However, one of the most exciting outcomes of the extra funding is we’ll be able to continue to create new Featured Artist collections every month. We were hoping from Kickstarter to at least be able to do three, and now we have the potential to create a lot more!”


Kent has included nail techs in her vision for the Scratch wraps. Any nail techs that pick the “Nail Tech Special” pledge on Kickstarter (at the $140 level) will get two of every design (18 in total) so you can try one out yourself and the other on a client. The Nail Tech Special also entitles you to at least 50% off retail for any wholesale order. “Overall, we are looking into options for working with professional beauty distributors and currently into pricing for wholesale to individual nail techs for salon use and retail as well,” Kent says. Obviously there are a ton of nail art wrap brands around. What makes Scratch different? “We’re not a big company just creating designs to sell to the masses. We are really focused on being a platform for artists to create and share their designs. What that means for our nail wrap designs is that they’re always unique to the artist’s style and in general to the world of nail wraps,” Kent says. “We want to work with all types of creatives to get a large variety of personality and unique style for our wraps. This means that our nail wraps are designed by all of us, the people who want to wear them, instead of a large company that’s deciding styles for us.”


Intrigued and wondering how you can get your own line of Scratch wraps? Scratch is accepting e-mail applications that include examples of your nail designs that you think would translate well into wraps and an intro to who you are and what you love, all sent to apply[at]goscratchit.com. The images of your designs sent do not have to be the actual designs you want to create for your Featured Artist collection, they just need to represent your style and what types of designs you’re into.  Each of the Featured Artists receive a percentage of the profits from his or her wraps, as well as 30 of his/her wraps for his/her own personal use.
