Chi Nail Bar’s Photo Light Box Blew Me Away

by NAILS Magazine | June 17, 2013 | Bookmark +

As I visited Chi Nail Bar in Beverly Hills, Calif., I wanted to take a picture of my stunning “Joker Nails,” created by Lexi Kumasaka. I wanted to take the photo with a backdrop of something with the Chi logo on it to give the salon credit where it was due — normally, I’ll snag a business card or a salon menu — when Lexi said, “I’ll get your picture set up for you.”

I turned around to see this amazing photographer’s light box set up on a manicure table. This may have been one of the most brilliant things I have ever witnessed at a nail salon.

Assembled by one of the employee’s photographer boyfriend, the portable box (it snaps shut for travel) features a step-and-repeat style backdrop that says “Chi” cleanly, built-in lighting, and two white side panels to reflect the light.

No wonder all of Chi’s Instagram photos (@chinailbar) look so amazing!

Most of us may not have someone who can build custom light box for us, but there are some affordable options on Amazon.com (In particular, I’ve been eying this SP200 Photo Studio in a Box). And creating a backdrop with your logo on it is as easy as going to your local office print shop. I’d love to see more salons get great nail art photos by using this set up.

If you love the Joker Nails (I know I did!), stay tuned for NAILS’ September issue in which we’ll have a step-by-step.
