Hello Kitty Nail Art at Comic-Con

[left] One of the Hello Kitty Lolitas, a cosplaying fan that combines pop culture and Japanese street style, welcomed fans to the Hello Kitty experience. [right] Her sister, a nail artist, did her nails a week before the convention.

Hello Kitty represented in full force, in promotion of Hello Kitty’s first graphic novel, at Comic-Con International held at the San Diego Convention Center, July 18-21. A gigantic gathering of comic lovers, cosplayers, self-proclaimed nerds, geeks, and movie fans, the comic convention covered every genre of comics, television, film, gaming, and pop culture imaginable, drawing in over 130,000 attendees for the four-day event.

At the “Hello Kitty Fashion Music Wonderland,” outdoors in a free Comic-Con Interactive Zone, fans that ordered $25 or more of any purchase were treated with a Sanrio-inspired nail art application by a Toyko-based nail artist. Avid Comic-Con-goer and Hello Kitty fan Chandra Hicks, pictured above, was given a cute Hello Kitty-esque bow.

To show just how much more popular Hello Kitty is becoming, the “kitty-chan” collaborations (above) take details of characters from completely different genres to create, in this case, a re-imagined Hello Kitty-Street Fighter fusion of characters.

This “Hello Kitty Frenzy” (in reference to an actual video game) and fanfare drives the point that Hello Kitty survives because she is versatile and open to continuous change as quickly as artistic styles, art mediums, pop culture, and fashion changes. Who knew my Hello Kitty encounter would be so eye-opening. We could all learn a thing or two from this trendy bobtail cat.
