Becoming My Grandmother

My grandmother has always been on the frugal side. And by “frugal,” I mean cheap, miserly, and entirely out of touch with reality. I think we all grew up with someone who thought that forking over that extra 20 cents to add cheese to your burger was highway robbery. Seriously, Grandma would get the burger and then go home and put cheese on it. And if she was going to spring for a fast food burger, you had better just shut up and be grateful. Because you were only getting one if it cost less than 75 cents. You weren’t getting cheese, so you sure as heck weren’t getting fries or a drink!

If she caught me with a Super Big Gulp — back in the day when they set me back all of 95 cents — she would go off on a tirade about “how nice it must be” that I can afford to get a soda! You’d think I’d won the lottery.

Well, the point is, I’m desperately close to being out of forms. What with Facebook and Youtube, I’ve had a chance to glimpse several super cool-looking form styles and designs and I got to thinking maybe it was time to stretch my horizons and look into getting some of those fancy forms. Never mind that some of them are from entirely different continents and I’m not even sure I can get them here.

This led to a tour of what’s available in the world of nail forms these days. YEEEEEE-OWZA! These things have really gotten pricey! I already thought the ones I’ve been using were on the pricier side at a roll of 500 for around $15. Guess it’s been a while since I bought nail forms.

First off, what happened to rolls of 500 being the norm? What I found today is that 300 on a roll is now common...and an awful lot of companies are charging $25 for a roll of 300 forms! I like to about fainted!

I like a nice, fancy form as well as the next tech, and sure, that still boils down to a pretty low cost per form, but I just cannot wrap my brain around the idea that it really costs that much to manufacture the little stickers. It’s just crazy talk, I tell ya!

And so now I’ve been stuck with my grandmother’s voice in my head all day, grumbling about paying 20 cents to put cheese on a burger.

Oh my... have I really gotten this old?

I just don’t know if I can justify it. I can still get forms that I’m quite fond of for about $5 a roll...of 500!
