NYFW F/W 2015: Essie Runs the Gamut

by Beth Livesay | February 17, 2015 | Bookmark +

Essie has been busy polishing away at more than 10 shows at New York Fashion Week so far. The brand's trusted group of lead manicurists, Julie KandalecRita Remark, and Michelle Saunders have been spearheading the effort to create NYFW nails that run the gamut from classic to trendy and everywhere in between. Here are the trends we are noticing so far:

Geometric Nail Art

When it comes to nail art, geometry is king. For Wes Gordon, Remark combined matte and shimmer finishes for a rectangular design. Use two coats of Essie Smokin’ Hot, one coat of Matte About You, then top off with a thick vertical line in Sexy Divide. To create the look, use the square tip of the brush to get the perfect rectangle. Start at the center of the nail and go out toward the tip.

Michelle Saunders updated the chevron look for a dual-hued fall palette at newly named Essie color designer Rebecca Minkoff's show. First, Saunders applied a coat of Mademoiselle to prep nails. Then she created a zigzag using a reverse V-shaped line on the middle of each nail using a coat of Berry Naughty. The same reverse V-shaped line on the tip used one coat of Midnight Cami. A coat of Good to Go top coat seals everything in.

Nudes

Essie put a twist on nude manis for the fall/winter season. At Diane von Furstenberg, Saunders took a cue from the vintage-inspired half-moon mani and recreated it with Sugar Daddy and Watlz. First, apply a coat of Sugar Daddy, then draw a semi-circle at the base with Waltz. Finish with Second Shine Around for a tonal look.

Saunders also created a nude “undone” look for DKNY. Saunders began with one coat of Essie’s Ridge Filling Base Coat, then finished with one imperfect swipe of All Eyes on Nude down the center of the nail, leaving negative space on both sides.

For a matte take on nude, Saunders used two coats of Essie Jazz topped with Matte About You for a creamy taupe nail at Alexander Wang.

Bold Color

Saunders settled on two palettes for Carolina Herrera’s show. One look was done in red using Essie Forever Yummy and top coat. The other was a light sheen created with Imported Bubbly, a coat of Allure, and completed with Good to Go top coat.

Aruba Blue was the inspired hue at Costello Tagliapietra. Kandalec used two coats of Aruba Blue for the bold metallic finish.

Remark sought out a midnight plum nail look for Yigal Azrouel’s show. She used one coat of Essie Carry on, a coat of Sole Mate, and top coat to give nails an Edwardian feel.
