It’s officially spring, so not only should you be cleaning out your salon, but you should be embracing organization and change for the better. Our favorite organizational guru, Sara Barba of XOXOrganizing,  shares her tips for getting your business in order for spring and beyond.

> When you have the busiest day ever, start with the task that will generate revenue.

> Create a Standard Operating Procedure for things that have three or more steps. Have your staff sign and date next to each item, if necessary.

> Never say, “I’ll sort paper/mail later.” Spend a little time every day so you won’t have a huge pile at the end of the week.

> Keep a stash of “thank you” cards just in case.

> Have too many business ideas? Good for you! Don’t freeze and do nothing. Start a folder labeled “Business Ideas.” Next time you need a little business inspiration, dig into your stash of fabulous ideas.

> Make a daily list of salon priorities. Make sure your staff knows what needs to be done each day.

> Keep things that are used daily close by. Anything else can be stored a little further away.

> Keep one master calendar. The minute you think of something that needs to be done, write it down so you won't forget it. Treat your calendar like your personal assistant by “telling” them everything that’s on your mind.

> When you put in an order to your favorite vendor, mark down the delivery date and follow up to make sure your shipment will be on time.

> Keep track of reoccurring activities like window washing, floor mopping, etc.

> Order checks with a carbon copy and attach it to the corresponding invoice that you pay.

> Get a business card holder and sort through it every tax season. Keep only the ones that interest you.

> Only print things that are necessary. If you pay bills online, be sure to print the receipt if it’s a tax write-off.

> Keep track of your mileage. You can use the MileIQ app to help.

> Sort through your file cabinet every tax season. Shred the documents you will never need and remove the documents that you will be writing off.
