Nails 101: A Student Blog

Week Eleven and Twelve: My First Client

At Advance Beauty College, manicuring students who have logged at least 100 hours are eligible to take on clients if they feel ready. Students are ordered by seniority, so those with more hours will take clients first. While at this point I was technically on the list to perform services, it wasn't likely to happen because there were at least 30 names before mine. That was until I was requested by client.

That's me and Chriss, my friend and first official client.

On week 11, a college friend of mine wanted me to do her nails. She was generous enough to visit me at school and she became my first official client. I remember we coordinated a specific time for her appointment and I could not focus that entire morning until she showed up. I was a nervous mess but I made sure I was composed on the outside by the time her appointment rolled around.

She requested a regular manicure and subtle nail art. She wanted nails that would be perfect for Vegas and something that would match her ensembles for nights on the Strip. Since I’ve become pretty confident with color blocking, I opted for a bright color and gold. She was very happy with her manicure and even gave me my first tip! I couldn’t believe I was able to pocket some cash that day. I have been so stuck in the school grind for more than two months that I had forgotten that outside of school, I can get paid for doing nails!

On week 12, I got to demo a spa manicure for my peers.

On week 12, the focus was on spa manicures again. Since my teacher noticed I was knowledgeable with the process, I was asked to perform a demo in front of the entire class! With my teacher’s help, I’d say the demo was a success.

Later that week, my friend and first client, Chriss came back for a polish change and more nail art. That means she was my first returning client!

This time she requested a subtle nail look perfect for a wedding. I opted for a silver and lilac moonicure to match the bridesmaid.
