The details of OPI Pro Spa will be released in March, but co-founder Suzi Weiss-Fischmann explained that the line has been in development for two years. She acknowledged that OPI is known for being “the color authority,” but with this launch they hope to be known as “the skincare authority.”

The inspiration for the line comes from facial treatments. Both Fischmann and Newport Beach, Calif.-based dermatologist Dr. Zena Gabriel made the point that women are overly concerned with the skin on their face, but it’s the hands that show aging first. “You can put makeup on your face, but what about your hands?” asks Gabriel. This line of products is meant to give clients a luxurious treatment that will keep hands and feet soft and healthy without being too oily. Fischmann recommends upselling the Pro Spa service for an extra $5 or $10. “This is the industry of touch,” points out Fischmann, who notes that a nail tech’s job is to appeal to all of the senses of her client.

When it comes to a nail tech’s hands, these products will also work to keep them in working shape. Dr. Gabriel recommends wearing gloves, even for smaller services like gel-polish removal, as it protects fingers and nails from the harsh effects of acetone. Even if you’re in a rush going from service to service, Dr. Gabriel stresses the importance of not over-washing hands and keeping them dry before placing them in gloves. Aquaphor (found at most chain drugstores) is another soothing option for nail techs to apply to their hands twice a day (morning and night) to keep them soft for clients.

Stay tuned to NAILS for the official OPI Pro Spa launch in March.
