As more and more salon-goers express concern over UVA nail lamps and their possible link to skin cancer, Allure quelled the misconception in its November 2012 issue.

Brian Diffey, an emeritus professor at Newcastle University in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, used a mathematical model to prove risks are extremely small, reports Allure.

If about 44,000 women used nail lamps once every three weeks for 40 years, starting at age 20, only one would develop squamous-cell skin cancer as a result.

Nail lamps deliver a small dose of UV light to the hands; in contract, tanning beds deliver a high dose to the whole body and thus are much more dangerous.
