They still have scars on their shins and lower legs, reminders of the bacteria they were infected with after getting pedicures at Fancy Nails, a salon in Watsonville, Calif., that has since closed. Although it may not get rid of the unsightly scars, 73 people will split about $3 million after settling a lawsuit with the salon.

Beginning January 1, 2006, would-be nail technicians in Utah will have to stay in school a little longer. The state passed legislation increasing licensure hours from 200 to 300. In addition, the state banned MMA and also clarified the definition for nail techs to work on the hands, feet, and nails.
