For season three’s second Last Chance Design Lab challenge sponsored by CND, Tan Nguyen and April Ryan will battle it out one-on-one to see who has a chance of staying in the competition. CND’s Jan Arnold will select her favorite look Friday and you’ll find out who will remain for at least one more week.

All Last Chance challenges are done on a single nail tip. Contestants are also asked to describe their looks. There are no other elements to this battle.

Since April packed her paintbrushes after the LA Landmark challenge, this week’s Last Chance challenge is loosely related.

Hollywood Portrait:  Hand paint a portrait of your favorite movie star.

Here are the looks they created:

Tan Nguyen

My favorite movie star is Bruce Lee. He was born November 27, 1940 in San Francisco, but  was raised in Hong Kong. Bruce Lee was born in the hour of the dragon and also the year of the dragon. The dragon is a powerful symbol in Chinese astrology and it led him to a strong and powerful life. I am also born in the year of the dragon. Bruce Lee is an actor, mentor, and philosopher. He starred in movies like “The Big Boss” (later to be called “Fist of Fury”) and  “Chinese Connection.” After enormous success with these, Bruce Lee wrote, directed, and produced his third film, “The Way of the Dragon,” also called “Return to the Dragon.” His next film was  “The Game of Death” but was put on hold to focus on his last and final production, “Enter the Dragon.” Tragically, Bruce Lee died just before the 1973 premiere at the Hollywood Chinese Theatre. The world lost a brilliant star and exceptional human being that day. His legend and spirit remain an inspiration to me and to untold numbers of people around the world.

Upon searching for photos of Bruce Lee I decided to use a black and white photo and make it come alive with colors. I started by penciling in a drawing on the nail tip. I then created the facial structure with black gel-polish. For shading the contours of Bruce Lee’s face, I used black gel-polish and acrylic paint. After shading, I mixed different colors of flesh-tone paints to add life to my portrait. Lastly I sealed the painting with matte top gel.

April Ryan

My favorite movie star is Angelina Jolie. She is a very talented actress and an outstanding person. She is also a movie director, a screenwriter, a model, and a UN goodwill ambassador. Her charitable organization, the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation, helps rural villagers improve their health and livelihoods in war-ravaged countries. In 2013 she won an Oscar and in 2014 the Queen of England named the Oscar-winning actress an honorary dame, in honor of her work fighting sexual violence and for services to UK foreign policy. Angelina Jolie is admired around the world for her inner and outer beauty.

I chose the character Maleficent because it is one of her most successful movies. I think Jolie resembles her character because like Maleficent she is powerful and has a strong character, but at heart she is very gentle and has the capacity for great love.

Congratulations to Tan Nguyen for winning the second Last Chance Design Lab challenge! Tan went up against April Ryan to create a celebrity portrait on a single nail tip. CND’s Jan Arnold chose the winner.

Jan said, “These two nail pros are incredibly talented! Tan’s Bruce Lee is a classic painting with a contemporary twist. He took a black and white photo and gave it breath. This portrait could be a life-size painting on the wall…so beautifully real, yet done in miniature on a tiny slender nail. Great proportion with realistic coloration and contouring.”

This means Tan will move on to compete against the next eliminated contestant. Find out on Friday who that will be.
