Scream Queens: The Top 2 and the Bottom 2

Challenge 8, sponsored by ibd asked our Top 5 to create a set of nails both ghoulish and glam, a look to be coveted by any self-respecting Scream Queen. The design needed to be on an actual hand using hard gel and gel-polish only. Contestants were asked to include a 3-5 minute video diary that shows how their creepy look came to life, along with a 300 word write up providing more gory details. This week’s guest judge was Nancy Hinojosa of ibd.

In alphabetical order, the Top 2 are:

Liina Leino: Talk about cutting edge. Your nasty array of sharp objects was campy, ghoulish, and well executed. Creating the perfect rusty patina and toxic liquid within the syringe were just a few of the brilliant and spooky details. Your video personality is without peer; now just refine lighting and perspective for the viewer.

Tracey Lee: Turning the phrase, “your nails are jewels, not tools” right on its head, you presented a set of darkly feminine nails that were both. Creating a double-sided “hidden” design, with a nefarious story to match, shows your limitless imagination.

The following tech can breathe again. She is in the middle of this week’s pack and is safe. Congratulations to:

Tracy Vinson: We’re still reeling from your haunting miniature portrait of Lady Gaga and the fact that you had never painted one with gel paints before. Huge applause from all the judges for strolling boldly out of your comfort zone on so many levels.

Unfortunately, there always has to be a bottom group. The bottom 2, in alphabetical order, are:

Cate Widemire: A chopped-off finger that looked so real! You freaked out the judges, in a good way. Overall, though, you seemed to lose sight of the theme and touched down in a few too many places. The nail art itself should have more of a “wow” factor.

Jonny Diep Pham: You’ve proven over and over again your extraordinary level of artistry and picture-perfect detail. The fact that you added cool lights to the design was noted as well. The judges wanted to see more of a “ghoulish meets glam” theme, however; dig deeper for the unusual. Also, remember to care for your own hard-working hands.
