Challenge 3 sponsored by Gel II, asked our Top 10 to show us what they treasured most on five nail tips. Contestants were allowed to use any mediums except for lacquer. The Top 10 also had to share with us a video diary. This week’s guest judge was Alena Clark of Gel II.

In alphabetical order, the Top 3 are:

Jonny Diep Pham: The details on your treasure chest were wonderfully dimensional. The judges agree you can tell an amazing story through precise and clean artwork. Week after week you give us something brilliant to behold! Your video cuts off a bit when you speak, and watch your own nails as well. But these are small things that the judges feel don’t detract from your exemplary work. Well done!

Tracy Vinson:  You appealed to the heart of this judging panel. We all agree that freedom is precious and worthy to be treasured. However, the judges wonder if this piece was too much art for art’s sake, and not enough for nails’ sake. Your painting is immaculate and your ideas and engineering are refreshing, but we didn’t get to see your painting in the video. The judges also wish you had used nail products to make more of your piece in place of ready-made materials.

Trisha Johnson: Trisha, you had a leg-up on your competitors this week! The judges loved your pin-up girl legs from nail tips and the hairstyling of your piece. The tie-in with your grandma’s artwork is so beautiful and special. We all felt that you had a deep personal connection with this challenge, and it showed through.

The following techs can breathe again. They are in the middle of this week’s pack and are safe. Congratulations to:

Dana Cecil: Nails as clock hands? It’s about time! While the judges liked your clock, they questioned the scale of the piece. As always, adorable video.

Deanna White: Your voiceover didn’t always match up with the scenes in your video, so make sure to watch this when editing. Speaking of editing, the judges recommend you edit your artwork a bit more. We loved that each tip represented someone different and was full of detail, but the problem was that there were too many details. Less can be more. Don’t overthink your design. We believe in you!

Liina Leino: You charmed the judges this week with a vibrant take on a serious topic. Your videos are always a delight!

Tracey Lee: Witch Tracey is hilariously entertaining and has great nails! There was so much creativity in your video and in making the bike, and the judges ate it up. Your nail art wasn’t as exciting for us as your video was, though. You told your story so very well on-camera, but your art should say 1,000 words on its own.

Unfortunately, there always has to be a bottom group. The bottom 3, in alphabetical order, are:

Amber Dunson: The judges loved your hope chest full of memories. However, they felt the base of the nails was a bit plain. Make sure your video is full-screen as well. You did a great job answering  the question in this week’s challenge, but the judges want you to take your designs to the next level.

Cate Widemire: Cate, you took a risk by staying true to the decade referenced in the challenge. The judges adored the vignettes in your movie especially. However, they aren’t sure if you answered the question of what it is you treasure personally. Also, we want to eat those chocolate chip cookies!

Liza Waitzman: The judges know you and your family had a tough week and we all sympathize with the added challenge this gave you when it came to finishing your piece. Your cake topper was a particular favorite and the waves give your artwork a sense of action that moved the judges. However, we wish you had shown us more action in your video as opposed to stills.
