Can we eliminate all the layers of gel and lay a thin overlay of acrylic, seal it with Intense Seal and call it gel nails?

My students and I are having a problem with gel nails. We’ve visited a salon where the tech uses LeChat powder gel base (I don’t know the product, but it sounds like acrylic to me) and then uses IBD Intense Seal on top. She cures it for about six minutes and calls it gel nails. This seems easier than the gel systems we use at school. My question: Can we eliminate all the layers of gel and lay a thin overlay of acrylic, seal it with Intense Seal and call it gel nails?

Answer

As far as eliminating all of the layers of gel, laying a thin overlay of acrylic and sealing it with Intense Seal to create gel nails, you’d have to ask yourself the following questions about your client: 1) Is she hard on her nails, meaning could she use a thicker coat? 2) Is she wearing tips where you need to fill the seam? 3) Does she have natural nails that need only a little extra strength? For a “yes” response to questions 1 or 2, I’d add two coats of the base before applying Intense Seal; for question 3, one coat should do.

In general, you can add Intense Seal to any gel or acrylic appliction as the final seal. Market it as a finishing service that brightens a French look and increases wear by blocking sunrays and cleansers. — Dennise Mason is brand manager for IBD.

How can I prevent lifting when my client's hands are constantly in water?

I have a client who is in the medical field so her hands are constantly in water. She has me keep the length of her acrylic nails short. No matter what I do, she always has at least one nail that comes off, and she always has lifting and gets water under the acrylic. I prep the nails correctly, I have a cuticle bit to clean the cuticle area, and I wipe the nail with alcohol, dehydrate the nail, and prime the nail. What should I do?
