Planning Ahead for 2012

by NAILS Magazine | October 12, 2011

First I want to offer my congratulations to the winners at the Sacramento show and everyone who competed. The photos I saw on Facebook of some of the work were beautiful!

I decided against going to Sacramento simply due to the expense for one day of competition. Traveling from east Tennessee to California with airfare, hotels, models, etc. can really add up.

As my fellow competitors can tell you, when you only have one day you have to line up more models, and good ones are hard to find and also more models means more expense.

I had originally hoped to justify the trip by teaching a class before the show but unfortunately that did not work out either. It was a bit disappointing but it happens. It is difficult and expensive to bring in artists and put together a class. So I used the time to work on my plans for the themes for 2012.

I tell you; once I start working toward stuff like this I wake up at night thinking about it. I have sticky notes, scrap paper, legal pads, and copy paper everywhere — at work, in my car, at home, and I normally consider myself a fairly organized person, but not at this point in the process.

I am also scheduling some practice models. In fact, I have a victim...ummmm…friend coming for a practice set tomorrow. You know someone is a good friend when they’ll sit with you for hours. I definitely appreciate her.

There have also been some changes made to the competitions for the 2012 season. There are some rule changes but more importantly there are some new competitions. I plan to enter more and will be giving several a try for the first time.

Competitions are stressful for me. They’re time consuming and challenging but yet rewarding at the same time. It pushes me to improve at what I have done and also step out on a limb and give something totally out of my comfort zone a try.

I look forward to seeing everyone in Long Beach!

Until then I will try to use my time wisely and practice…practice …practice.
