We made it through the first season of Boss Nails! Dana Cody and Tippie Toes salon let cameras through their doors to capture the drama, the craziness, and the creation of nail sets that made them famous.
The nails shown throughout this season have left me with mixed emotions. We’ve seen everything from the record-setting Imperial Nails to some not-so-hot sets. We’ve got to see new, innovative techniques and also some no-no’s (the dremel drama!). Also, we got to see the techs at Tippie Toes create their infamous Treasure Nails--the over-the-top bling nails that put the salon on the map.
“There’s no place like Tippie Toes ..."
Dana added some Instagram-famous techs to the roster in this first season which is a great way to bring followers to a salon. But what she didn’t account for is the chemistry between her current staff and the new social media celebs. Nuni Torres (@nunis_nails) and Dania (@nailgawdbydmarie) both joined Tippie Toes under Dana Cody, but fate would show that neither one of them would remain on the team until the last minute of the finale show. I wonder if it was the egos of the high profiles or the shenanigans of the crew that didn’t make Tippie Toes feel like home for these two. In fact, the way the camera roll showed it, Nuni not only stood up Dana, but he quit Tippie Toes just hours before the launch party for Imperial Nails! (How convenient, right?!) I would have been pissed!

Now onto the Launch Party…
All season we’ve heard about Dana’s investment into her Imperial Nails, which are custom jewelry that you wear on your fingertips. On the last episode of Boss Nails, Dana decided to introduce the nails by having a launch party. Her cousin Paige, a tech at the salon, was appointed to be the party planner. She definitely was feeling the heat with this one, especially since her cousin/boss made it very clear that she had a lot of money on the line. After some planning, Paige presented the party in a way that was overall classy and stylish, complete with a red carpet and fashion show. Dana even took a walk down the runway. But most important, they sold a set of Imperial Nails (after first getting that $10,000 deposit)!

Nail Techs: United and Divided
I had really high hopes when I heard about this series. As I watched, I quickly found out that it was less of a reality show about nails than it was a reality show set in a nail salon. The drama and attitudes brought general viewers, while techs got to see the good, bad, and ugly of working at Tippie Toes salon. I’m sure a lot of this show was probably scripted (a necessity with reality TV) and edited to get the most viewers. But how much is too much when there is an entire underrepresented industry at stake?
But this got me thinking: Techs come in all colors, backgrounds, education, attitudes, and their own signature marks. This is what I love about being a part of this culture! So what is the cost of this show, and will we as professional nail techs have to pay for it?
Thank you for reading my reviews throughout the season. It has been so much fun sharing my thoughts on this show!
Now let the conversation begin! Oh! And do yourself a favor and be sure to stay updated on the biggest question of this year: Who will be NAILS’ Next Top Nail Artist?!
