As a follow-up to our March LIVE on shoes and feet, here are some highlights of the discussion:
> Everyone has a tendency to take their feet for granted unless their feet issue warnings in the form of pain. One of the things that can cause us the most pain and discomfort is shoes! One inch of heel on a shoe transfers 25% of our body’s weight from the heel to the ball of the foot. This means that four inches of heel will transfer 100% of your body weight to the ball of your foot, which was not designed to be weight bearing. The ball of the foot is designed to be used for walking and balance.
> On average we carry 25,000 pounds of pressure on the bottom of the foot! That’s the weight of an armored car designed to have a 10,000-pound carrying capacity! Can you imagine an armored car parked on your foot? Just two inches of heel adds 12,500 psi to the ball of the foot, for a total of 37,500 psi!
> The Chuck Taylor shoe (Chuck Taylor All Star Converse) was released in 1932 by Chuck Taylor, who was a basketball player for the Converse All Stars, a professional team at that time. He became a salesman for the Converse shoe company after retiring from basketball. Can you believe this hipster, grunge, rock star shoe has been around so long!?
> The most popular theory for the rise in popularity of high-heeled shoes on women starts with Catherine de Medici of Italy who married to King Henry III of France in 1533. She wanted to compete with the king’s mistress who was a taller stature, so Catherine had a pair of shoes made with a high heel. This made her hips sway “seductively” when dancing and walking, which in turn made them the rage of Europe to the point that church clergy branded them “devices of Satan, to stir the lusts of men.”
With all of these little fun facts running around in our minds, just remember to be kind to your feet — they’re the only ones you have! Maintaining a regular pedicure schedule is your best way to counteract some of the damage done to the feet.
