Webmaster Debbie Doerrlamm founded BeautyTech.com in 1994, before many companies even had email. Doerrlamm, who passed away in 2017, envisioned the site as a virtual forum connecting nail, hair, skin care, and tanning professionals and creating a sense of community. The popular message boards fostered candid discussions of everything nail-related, with techs helping their peers, and the site even organized in-person meet-ups like the NailTech Networking Event in Orlando. In response to negative media stories about salon safety, the site added a section devoted to educating consumers about MMA and sanitary nail services. BeautyTech also sponsored the annual Strut Your Stuff nail art contest, one of the first photo competitions.
